Create Digitization

Digitization is the process by which analog media is converted to a digital format. This is done using a mix of analog hardware, and digital software. Different items require different processes to digitize. See below for a list of items we can digitize, their processes, and restrictions.

VHS, VHS-C, and 8mm cassette tapes

We use a standard VCR to playback VHS tapes.
We use a standard VCR and a VHS-C adapter to playback VHS-C tapes.
If you would like to convert something that we do not have the equipment for, you are responsible for providing something that can playback your item and connect via RCA cables to our digitizer.

We use VidBox Video Conversion Suite to convert the playback to a digital format. That file is then slightly edited to remove blank frames from the beginning and end of the file. If a DVD is to be created, DVDStyler is used. Otherwise, the file is transferred to an external storage device.

You are responsible for providing the DVD(s)/Storage Device(s) which are to be used. We are happy to convert all of the items then provide you with the amount of DVD(s)/Storage Device(s) required.

We request all tapes brought in already be rewound - if at all possible.
Please limit the amount of tapes dropped off at a time to 10 or less.
We will not digitize copyrighted materials. Most TV shows, movies, and music fall under this.
While BCPL staff does not actively watch the tapes, we do have occasion to see what’s being played. Because of this, we ask that tapes of sensitive or explicit nature not be brought in.

Turnaround Time

We are unable to provide an estimate for when your items will be finished. Some aspects of digitization take longer than others. To reduce the amount of time your items remain stored at BCPL, we add your name to a list and call you when it’s your turn - you may bring your items in at that time.

Liability

There are risks associated with digitizing analog materials. While BCPL staff does everything in their power to guarantee the safety of your items, we cannot be held responsible for damage incurred during the digitization process, nor damage incurred during the storage of your items at our facility.

Note

1. We no longer offer slide/film digitization in The Studio. BCPL now has a Kodak Slide ‘n Scan Digital Film Scanner for loan in the Library of Things.

2. We do not digitize film reel. However, BCPL has an 8mm/Super 8 Reel Digitizer for loan in the Library of Things.
